A problem with a lot of litrpg books is that they focus almost entirely on stats and the player grinding. This book? Actually has a plot, and while the character gains powers and skills they feel more like a nice embellishments. It's not super deep, but I read for entertainment and I was entertained. I needn't have worried though as the author's style of writing, description of the characters and the well thought out narrative soon had me glued to the book.
You can identify very easily with all of the main characters and although there were a few unexpected surprises, they embellished the narrative as a whole and any time where I was forced by personal. matters to put the story down I was always eager to get back to my reading! A wonderful start to the series and I cannot wait to get started on book 2. Report abuse. not bad. I feel kind of torn about this.
Dragon Seed is a fantasy novel, and that fantasy part is pretty standart. The worldbuilding with the races, quests, heros and so on is barely anything new, but the clue is that it is, in fact, an RPG. And that's what makes Dragon Seed so interesting. But let me start at the beginning: The year is and the humanity is dying. Most people are infected with a deadly virus, and with the threat of a nuclear strike even the lucky ones who escaped the virus are at risk. To save humanity, the virtual world of the super-immersive VR RPG Archemi Online has been converted as a refuge, where people can basically upload themselves and keep on living in the fantasy world.
The really cool part though is how the players and the fact that it is a game is part of the worldbuilding - people have healthbars and levels and skill points and inventories, and that is totally normal.
Player's profiles and stats are derived from their actual personalities, traits like introversion, or dyslexia and real world skills. In Archemi they are "Starborn", immortal as in respawning and known to come in times of need to fullfil quests. To make this part of the world, of the logic and physics instead of just a side thing special to the player-characters was fascinating and super cool.
The lore of Archemi is expansive and goes very deep. There is tons of races, people, religions, kingdoms and countries, and the history of the world go way back. It's not always easy to keep track of all that.
A glossary would have been helpful, and I hope book2 will have one because I have no idea how much details I will be able to remember. The protagonist Hector is Korean-American and dyslexic and was conscripted into the war that's now ruining the world. Circumstances lead to him being able to escape the sure death of the virus and enter Archemi as one of the first.
Hector is a cool main character and I liked him, even though he is kind of a macho. And honestly: same All that being said, the book didn't work for me as well as I had hoped. The plot is twisted and rather dark - as Hector himself thinks: for a world that is not only supposed to be escapist but also act as the new home for thousands, if not millions of refugees, not all of whom are gamers or even just adventurerers, Archemi is brutal. There is slavery, racism, sexism, tons of violence, civil wars, other wars, oppression, torture, basically all the bad things you can think of.
At one point it's basically implied to be "normal" for women to expect to be raped or sexually harassed. As awesome as the character creation and the different races of Archemi and their cultures are I realized that Archemi is not a game I would want to play. Combined with a twisted plot that is full of betrayal, bad luck and horrible secrets, all the bad stuff was just too much for me. Almost none of the many people Hector meets are truly good or don't have an ulterior motive of bad allegiance that is only revealed later, and he doesn't have a real companions or any friends that last during the book, which made all this even worse.
I did enjoy many parts of Dragon Seed and I am fascinated by many of its aspects, but looking back it left mostly bad feelings due to its overall darkness. Translate review to English. I am a long time Dungeons and Dragons player, and love the LitRPG genre, so I really looked forward to reading this book. It did not disappoint. What a full on, fun and thrilling ride! The world is brilliantly detailed, the hero, Hector, is nuanced, complex and oh-so-real, all other characters are vibrant and detailed, I absolutely loved this book and read it in a single sitting, unable to put it aside, until I was done.
I am now buying the second book in this wonderful series. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book! I enjoyed the book a lot and look forward to see more of this worlds dragons. The flawed, yet cool and multidimensional MC and the mysterious backstory that intertwines game lore and real world conspiracies make this a must read!

Verified Purchase. Enjoyed the third book of the series. Definitely held up to the greatness of the first two. Can't wait for the next one. This one was definitely worth the wait. Whether it was the episodes that Baldwin went through recently in his personal life or just the fact that this book is about twice the size as the las two volumes, he has managed to elevate both the world-building and the character development to a level on par with any top-shelf fantasy, and one rarely seen in litrpg.
You will not regret this one. Is that a settlement building coming up or am I just happy to see it? Great story and tieing off of a lot of dangling arcs. It also does an awesome job of setting up the follow up books with enough intrigue and reveals to make me wish book 4 was just around the corner.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. was amazing! Book three, and we are still learning, growing, evolving. Like the first two books Kindome Come is a book about relationships. Hectors starts learning to trust in his chosen familiy and his chosen family learns to trust each other. This one, although still slightly political was much more a warbook then everything else in the series.
It has twists and turns, throws in a few everlasting challenges. It is written by someone who clearly loves videogames and tabletop games and it shows! Can't wait to get my hands on book four in may! Report abuse. Looking forward to the next adventures. Wondering where it will lead. This story currently at book 3 is impressive. It's written in the LitRPG genre, but the writing doesn't bog down too much with stats.
The writing focuses much more on the story and -- no, I'm not making this up -- actual character building. Not in the "character sheet" type of character building, but in the "this person has actual emotions, and feelings, and issues, and growth" type of character building. I will mention that this book was twice the length of the preceding books, making it not only a good read, but a real bargain if you're going to buy it.
I started reading it via KU, but about halfway through realized I needed to add it to my permanent library, and bought it. Not a big shocker, but I'll warn that you absolutely need to read the first two books in the series, or you'll be lost quickly.
It's worth it, as the majority of the world and environment is set up early. I won't give away many spoilers, but I absolutely can't help with this one, because it made me very happy: yes, Karalti did get her morphing skill at level 9, but things don't turn out the way you might expect at least not yet. So again an awesome litrpg DRAGON story. Hits all the high marks.
The story is complex and getting more so but in a manageable manner. This episode takes place mostly in the swamp. Undead and vampires being the problem. To claim his nobility and fight the corruption the MC must save his new reform from the Vampire invasion.
Might be easier if battling the undead were the only problem as the is strife in the ranks of the defenders that must be dealt with first and fast. Grind, level, learn.
The real magic for survival.
